This time around, I thought it could be fun to do a reading pathways post to a young adult author and hopefully build up a few of those. So today, lets talk about YA author Blake Nelson. Perhaps the name isnt super familiar to casual YA readers. Perhaps even those who have been reading YA for quite a while dont know him immediately. But Nelsons been doing YA fiction for a long time his first novel  Girl became a cult classic in YA fiction in the early 1990s, when it was serialized in the  teen magazine  Sassy. Since hes been doing this for two decades, hes written over 12 YA novels, has been part of the Sister Spit tour, and continues to push his work, which is primarily contemporary realistic fiction, to new and interesting places, remaining a fresh voice in the category. So where do you begin? The answer is simple enough in saying that to get a true sense of Nelsons catalog, its worth starting with  Girl. Imagine being a teenage girl Portland, Oregon in the early 1990s. Theres grunge, theres grit, theres drugs, and theres plenty of opportunity for sex. Andrea, the main character, goes from being a shy and conservative girl to working her way into the underground rock scene. Along the way, she questions every single decision and relationship shes making she wants to stand out and be seen and noticed but shes also scared to death to put herself out there. She wonders whether shes being true to herself or if shes selling out in order to be known and accepted by her peers. Girl  is written stream-of-conscious style, and its exhausting and exhilarating because of that. Readers are right there with Andrea and they can see what shes thinking, what her worries are, and they can see through the entire process that while shes worried about the kind of girl she is, shes being the girl who she is. Its a smart and sharp story, and the hallmarks of the storys settings both in time and place enhance it. Andreas exceptionally memorable, and in 2011, Nelson wrote a sequel to  Girl  called  Dream School. It follows Andrea as she leaves Portland to attend her dream college in the Northeast and how her perception of herself and of others shifts (and doesnt shift) through the transition. When you finish  Girl, its time to try your hand at an entirely different voice and narrative style in Nelsons oeuvre.  Paranoid Park, which was made into a film by Gus Van Sant, follows a nameless male character after he makes a horrific and life-altering mistake: he kills a security guard with his skateboard. He doesnt get caught, though, and it was done in what he believes is self defense. He manages to get away from the scene, and he ditches the skateboard. But being that he was able to get away with it, hes now stuck with the question: does he confess or does he keep the murder a complete secret in order to live his life like a normal person? The main character is a good kid, and having this on his rap sheet would be the worst thing possible. But he also wonders if it is worse to not say anything and live with the guilty conscious. This novel is dark and the paranoia and torment the main character goes through internally are immediate and make the reading experience tough (in the best way possible). What happens when your innocence is lost quickly and unintentionally because of an innocent mistake? The question at the center of Nelsons just-released  The Prince of Venice Beach  isnt far removed from the one in  Paranoid Park: when presented the choice to do the right thing or do the thing that would be best given (x, y, or z) situation, which do you choose? Cali is a runaway who lives on the streets of Venice Beach, California, and while it sounds like it could be the worst possible situation, for Cali, its not too bad. Hes got a load of friends, a place to crash at night, and theres a girl who shows some interest in him. But when a local cop recommends Cali to a private investigator, hes put into the position of locating a girl named Reese who has gone missing for a reason. And while he loves the work and loves the purpose hes being given, Cali understands that turning her in comes with a big cost: her freedom and her autonomy. This book requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, but going in with the idea its meant to be a fun boy-turned-PI story makes it work. This isnt going to be as dark as  Paranoid Park, but it will traverse some really heavy stuff anyway: runaway culture and the loyalties that those who live on the streets have to one another and to their own stories. While were tackling Nelsons lighter-hearted fair, it would be impossible not to talk about  Destroy All Cars, which sounds like its going to be serious and some parts of the story  are  serious but at heart, its a really funny book. James, who lives in suburban Portland, loves to rail about how cars and their dependency on gasoline are ruining our planet. He hates consumer culture and hell take every opportunity to remind anyone how theyre personally contributing to Earths destruction. In addition to being angry about the ways humans are destroying the planet, James also devotes significant time to thinking about the first girl he ever fell in love with: Sadie. His hearts been shattered by their breaking up and while he spends a lot of time thinking about the other girls who he could date, he cant stop thinking about Sadie. Shes important to him because she, too, shares a lot of the same beliefs and passions he does when it comes to saving the planet. Its cut short, though, as Maddies been cleared to leave and Stew still needs to finish his time in treatment. The heart of  Recovery Road  happens when Maddies put back into the life she had trouble being fully in prior to treatment. When she was known as the crazy party girl, how can she resume life as a changed, clean, and more buckled-down version of herself? Is that who she really is? And with her interest in pursuing romance with Stew and friendship with Trish, she discovers that being true to herself means coming to make decisions about who she is now and who she wants to be in the future. Does she simply want to get out of high school or does she want to put the work into getting into a great college after graduation? Its a bumpy road, and its filled with twists, turns, and potholes. Relationships shift and change, and no matter how good Maddie does, she finds that even those she loves and respects deeply cant follow through on their promises to themselves and she cant control them. The results confirmed previous research findings indicating that males tend to estimate higher IQ scores than females. The purpose for the test is to measure intelligence quotient, (IQ).Theorists such as Francis Galton and Alfred Binet developed the origins of IQ testing. Two basic propositions of the theory are that there is a variation among members of any species, and that this variation is inherited, differences between parents in one generation being transmitted to their offspring to the next, which is Darwins Theory of evolution (1831). Theorists such as Binet and Termans (1916) developed the modern IQ test from these psychometric tests, which included The Wechsler tests and Ravens Matrices. These two tests followed the Stanford Brent tests, and included a wide variety of different items. Those who supported ideas of pragmatic intuition thought different types of items might favour or penalise different people. Binet and Termans (1916) sought to answer their hypothesis whether intelligence was best conceptualised as a single general process of a multitude of different abilities and skills. Once Malvolio leaves, Maria concocts a plan to make Malvolio look like a complete fool: since Marias handwriting is similar to Olivias, she will write love letters to Malvolio and make it look like the letters have come from Olivia. The party decides to try this out and see if it will work. His soaring high opinion of himself allows him to believe what he wants to, because of this he misunderstands everything Olivia says. When she instructs him to go to bed to sleep off his madness he believes she means to go to bed with her, Ill come to thee. Olivia shows concern for her loyal servant and asks for special care of her fellow. He also takes these words the wrong way and launches into a great speech about how she recognises him as her social equal and fellow. When Olivia departs the trick is rendered a success as Malvolio hath taken the infection of the device and fallen for it. The audience is reminded of Malvolios snobbishness, go off, I discard you. This only encourages the kinsmen and servants pretend they believe he is a lunatic, possessed by the devil, bewitched and attempt to convince Malvolio himself that he is mad, defy the devil. They wind him up and pretend to be concerned by calling him childishly affectionate names like chuck and biddy. Malvolio senses that they are ridiculing him, and getting annoyed he almost stoops to their element by telling them to be proud about all aspects of himself, to such an extent that he is greatly bordering on superciliousness. Overall, with taking into consideration the negative and truly objectionable aspects of Malvolio, it can be seen that he does in fact need to be taught a lesson about the downfalls of his disdainful ways. The fact that he is so totally self-satisfied, means that convincing him of anothers love (i. e. Olivias) is easy to achieve. The letter written by Maria in Olivias hand refers subliminally to each of Malvolios character weaknesses and consequently ensures that he is fooled by its meanings. His vanity and value of appearance are both fed by the order to wear: Yellow stockings ever cross gartered. While his lack of humour and proposing his puritan lifestyle is his vanity. He also takes pride in his physical appearance should she fancy, it would be one of my completion which tells us that he thinks he is a person who is admired; he is generally happy with himself. Maria flatters him in the letter by saying thy smiles become thee well. This personality may be a disguise, although it may also be Malvolios true character that he has been forced to oppress because of his situation in the house and status in society. The new-found confidence he is given in receiving this letter maybe instead of asking him to change his personality, is really letting him show his true self that he has been hiding behind a front of hostility. Malvolio may have been masking himself previously, and now he is given the chance to remove this guise. Maria also orders him to be surly to the servants and opposite with a kinsman. Olivias kinsman is Sir Toby, so Malvolio takes this to mean that he is free to be rude and disrespectful of him, and thinks that Olivia wants him to do this to show his love for her. This is likely to only make her dislike him more- the point of Marias plan. The rest of the crew are hiding in the box tree and listening to every word he is saying about them. This does not encourage them to be lenient with Malvolio. After witnessing Malvolios egoistic fantasies, we can see why he is so easily duped by Marias letter. Ironically the man who once put down the clown (Feste) is now becoming the clown himself as he reads out coarse puns: These be her very Cs, her Us and her Ts; and thus makes her great Ps. Malvolio is convinced that Olivia is deeply in love with him but doesnt know how to tell him. In the letter Maria makes Malvolio believe that Olivia is asking him to wear yellow stockings as a sign that he loves her, a style which she in fact detests. The March of the Flag Summary Albert Beveridge, an enthusiastic imperialist, was campaigning for the Indiana senator seat in 1898 when he delivered The March of the Flag speech. The speech, which was published later in the Indianapolis Journal, was pronounced one month after the signing of armistice. The speech aimed at promoting US imperialism both as a divine and national mission that originated with Thomas Jefferson. In the speech, he used religious rhetoric and invoked God eleven times to appeal to an audience. The audience expected politicians to know the Holy Scriptures and took divine Providence as Manifest Destiny. He envisaged the US taking a colonial which he defined in terms of a divine mission. Running as the party of prosperity, economic stability and the gold standard, Republicans won the 1896 presidential election. William McKinley easily defeated the populist Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan, having gotten enormous campaign contributions mainly from big businesses. He was to usher in a long period of republican dominance in the countys politics. During the period, Cuba was experiencing a humanitarian crisis and the US intervened by attacking Spain in April 1898, quickly acquiring Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. However, in the Philippines, it took a long and brutal war to quell mounting internal rebellion. When the speech was being delivered, the status of the new territories had not been settled. The objections, he says defies the notion of patriotism and celebration of Americas power. Beveridges first argument was founded on the fact that his countys geographical position gave it political and economic power in terms of resources, size and location dividing the two imperial oceans. This assertion implied that Americas superiority was beyond that of all European powers. In paragraph 3, he refers to myth of the west in relation to the unexplored land or wilderness (paragraph 3). He mentions the heroes of expansionary wars and puts forward a mythic observation of the western conquest of the 1840s (paragraph 7). Beveridges third argument centres on racial superiority. He alludes to the blood (paragraph 2) and evokes the feeling of power associated as evidenced by the virility of the countrys multiplying people. In his view, the increase in American population is sue to their virility and is not related to immigration: this illustrates the mythic approach that America gives to its problems. President Roosevelt would pose as an energetic and virile man on several occasions. This cult of force, power and energy suggests a Darwinian twist in Beverigdes ideas. In paragraph 5, Beveridge adds yet another dimension to his argument-that of a historical mission of duty. This suggests a traditional puritan idea of stewardship as renewed by the Gospel of wealth during the Gilded Age. Stewardship aimed at civilising people and converting them to Christianity at the same time. Along with the call to stewardship came the need to extend democracy to those perceived to be oppressed. Ironically, the freedom that the American liberators could bring didnt go as far as extending freedom to all. Beveridge calls it rules of liberty self-government. Beveridges insistence on the sense of mission blankets what is a major preoccupation for his country economical predominance. In paragraph 6, he uses the word reward in reference to the parable of Talent. This is a clever marriage of religious economic rhetoric. In his view, rewards were to come in form of new riches and markets- an idea prevalent in the Gospel of wealth that takes wealth for Gods blessing. This shows that the real aim behind imperialism is indeed commercial supremacy. The recurrence of the words domination and power in last paragraph are indicators of this fact. Contextually, the approaching elections were his countrys short term preoccupation. In the long term, the preoccupation was whether the new territories would be annexed to America. Beveridge wanted even more territories to be annexed after the Philippines. His stand was that the values of the American Revolution were not contradictory to the policy of annexation and the views of those living in the annexed territories. To him, the colonised were inferior people who couldnt enjoy the values of American Revolution in equal measure to the Americans. This was a flat rejection of the notion of equality (paragraph 8-10). The constitution should not follow the flag- i.e. the annexed territories shouldnt enjoy the constitutional entitlements of his countrys constitution. His racist mindset clearly comes to the fore in chapter 10 when he describes as inferior the people of foreign lands as savages and alien populations. He envisaged a colonial America governing the new territories since England did it to America.ÂÂ  Besides, he explains that the Indians experience offered ideas as to how to handle the conquered. In clearly distinctive wording of we versus them, he is opposed to assimilation of those savages with the mainstream Americans (paragraph 8). His mentality correlates well with that of southerners towards the blacks prior to the Civil War. Finally, he defends the Philippines conquest as a rampart to the then greedy competition for territories by world powers saying that if US didnt do it, other powers would do so. ÂÂ   The article is no doubt a celebration of American mythical and heroic founding. It features an explicit show of force and brutality: economic domination of conquered territories, virility of the American population, racial competition and accumulation of wealth at the expense of conquered territories. It evokes the feeling of American supremacy since its founding and the brutal materialism that continues to define American way of life down to the present. The vocabulary indicates both cynicism and naivety. The militant celebration served to convince the deeply cynical electorate to pull in the direction of imperial America. It is naive to the fact that such imperialism deeply violated the values of America as a nation, a fact that could not resonate well with not only the electorate but also the leftist leaning statesmen of the time. To best drive his point home, he insisted on syntactical patterns and repetition of words to bring the audience to his point of focus. His fre quent use of questions and answers gave the speech a polemical quality and seemed like a dialogue with his audience. This particularly made the cynical audience evaluate its stand with every posing of a question and giving of a suggested answer.
